What counts as green waste
Everything that grew out of the ground in your yard. Some stuff people think is green waste actually isn't — so here's the clean list.
›Yes — goes in a green bin
- Grass clippings, lawn turf, weed piles
- Pruned branches under 100mm diameter
- Hedge trimmings, leaves, bark
- Soil (small amounts — for larger loads ask for a soil bin)
- Fallen fruit and vegetable matter
- Small tree stumps — under 300mm diameter
- Untreated timber offcuts from a garden project
›No — contaminates the load
- Treated timber, fence palings, pine decking (chemical treatment)
- Plant pots, plastic bags, weed mat
- Concrete path offcuts, paver remnants
- Tree stumps over 300mm (book a separate stump bin)
- Any household rubbish — even a single bag contaminates the whole load
Contamination = reclassification
If the bin comes back with household rubbish mixed in, we have to send it to the general waste stream and charge the higher rate. Clean green waste stays clean — one plastic bag costs you the whole discount.
When to book a green waste bin vs a mixed bin
If more than 90% of your load is garden waste, book green. If you're mixing garden waste with general rubbish — old paint tins, broken furniture, cardboard — book mixed.
